Abstract:
|
Students in an accredited Business undergraduate program are required to take two semesters of statistics in which statistical literacy is a major objective. This study assesses statistical literacy of Business Statistics using the ARTIST CAOS exam coupled with results from the SATS survey of students' attitudes towards statistics. Students were followed over two semesters. They were tested and surveyed three times: pre first course, pre and post second course. A repeated measures ANOVA showed significant improvement (p< 0.001) in CAOS scores. Student attitudes did not change in the 1st course but dropped significantly in three of the 6 attitude components in the 2nd course: perceived difficulty (p=0.006), interest in statistics (P=0.046) and effort put forth (p=0.01). Concurrent with attitudes, students' self-reported expected grade dropped significantly (p=0.002).
