Abstract:

In biomedical studies, researchers are often interested in the relationship between patients' characteristics or risk factors and both longitudinal outcomes such as quality of life and survival time. We propose a method for the simultaneous analysis of survival time with Cox proportional hazards model and longitudinal outcomes with generalized linear mixed model. Random effects are introduced into the proposed models to account for dependence between survival time and longitudinal outcomes due to unobserved factors, and assumed to follow a multivariate normal distribution. EM algorithm is used to derive the point estimates for the parameters in the proposed model and observed information matrix is used to estimate their variances. Finite sample properties are assessed via simulations. We illustrate our approach with head and neck cancer data and cytomegalovirus disease data.
