Abstract:

Paul Ellner and his colleagues at AMSAA are recognized leaders in reliability testing, modeling, and analysis. AMSAA has been an important voice in the expanding dialogue between the statistical and defense communities, assisting in efforts to promote more effective use of statistical methods to improve the acquisition and use of military systems in the interest of national defense. Advances in technology, shifting global politics, and the 9/11 terrorist attacks are among the factors that have created new challenges, as well as new opportunities for statisticians to contribute to the understanding and strengthening of national security. We seek better ways to organize and extract information from massive data sets. We apply risk analysis in protecting critical assets. This paper weaves these threads into a contemporary perspective on statistics in defense and national security.
