Abstract:

H. O. Hartley was born in Berlin in 1912 as Herman Otto Hirschfeld and left Nazi Germany in 1934. After nineteen years in England, he emigrated to the United States, where he contributed strongly to the development of Statistics - first as a Visiting Professor at Iowa State College and then as Director of the newly formed Institute of Statistics at Texas A&M University. This poster - besides giving an overview on the life of a visionary in the field of Statistics - will provide a glimpse on what Hartley imagined for the future not only of Statistics itself, but especially of Statistics Departments across the country. He always realized the huge impact of computers, while they were still in the fledgling stages in his lifetime, and tried to advance their usage as much as possible.
