Abstract:

The quality of the doctoral dissertation, and the achievement of related learning competencies are largely influenced by the expertise of the members of the dissertation committee. In this regard, committee members must recognize their limitations, and know when to refer the student for consultation and/or seek the same themselves. This is especially relevant to issues pertaining to statistical methods and research design. This paper will present and discuss the perspectives of consultant statisticians and methodologists, current and past dissertation committee members, as well as doctoral students and recent doctoral graduates. Strategies to facilitate improvement of the dissertation process will be addressed.
