Abstract:

This study is about a staff scheduling problem in the registration department of an outpatient clinic at a hospital. The task is to determine the number of staff needed so that 95% of patients do not wait more than 10 minutes. The workflow at the department can be described as a birth-and-death queueing model observing a first-come first-serve protocol. We perform empirical analysis of data collected over a month. Based on this analysis, we fit piecewise the simplest stochastic approximation to the queueing process. The results of the model and suggested staff requirements for the outpatient clinic are presented in the study.
