Abstract:

A xenograft mouse model was used to mimic and to assess the heterogeneity of breast cancer progression potential. Human ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) cell culture, classified into a number of subtypes by a flow cytometer, was transplanted to mice on both sides of breast. Lesions appeared in mammary ducts at 2--3 weeks post transplant, and the numbers of ducts with lesions were recorded. Observations of more than 7 ducts were censored. To study the progression potential of the DCIS cell subtypes, we modeled the counts of mammary ducts with lesions across the treatments of the subtypes by censored Poisson/negative binomial mixed-effects models with and without zero-inflation.
