Abstract:

Although the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) was developed to improve statistical reasoning and literacy, it is also important to study the change in the attitudes and dispositions of college students toward math and statistics as these are potential by-products of applying the GAISE framework. This is because formulas and equations can be forgotten and re-learned, but student dispositions are more likely to be retained. I will present students' sample narratives (pre and post) in the following dimensions of dispositions: how they value math and statistics; their vision of math and statistics; and their perceived level of self-efficacy. In this data of 117 college students whose majors do not include a specific mathematics requirement, their disposition toward math and statistics can be fostered and changed in a positive way through GAISE.
