Abstract:
|
In its 2003 publication "BIO2010: Transforming Undergraduate Education for Future Research Biologists" the National Research Council provides a series of recommendations for a new curriculum in biology to provide a "strong foundation in mathematics, physical and information sciences to prepare students for research that is increasingly interdisciplinary in character." This talk will summarize two interdisciplinary efforts at UMW to meet BIO2010 recommendations to increase biology students' exposure to statistical methods. The first example pairs students in a statistics methods course with students in a human physiology course to provide assistance on designing an experiment and analyzing the results. The second example is a new course on preparing biology students for conducting research that focuses on the research proposal and introducing students to data analysis techniques.
