Abstract:

Once a vaccine has been licensed for widespread use to reduce the incidence of a specific disease, it is important to monitor the breakthrough cases of this disease in the vaccinated population to determine if and when vaccine efficacy wanes, and when a booster dose may be advisable. Standard control charting methods, including Shewhart-type, CUSUM, and EWMA charts, can be modified to monitor breakthrough cases of disease to address these questions. Modifications to these charts are necessary to account for the differing times of patient vaccination and other issues which will be discussed. The average run length performance of these control charts will be presented in the context of a study being conducted to monitor the long-term efficacy of a new vaccine, to show how these charts compare and to determine the most effective chart to use when implemented under different scenarios.
