Abstract:

In many clinical trials, the outcome variable of interest is recurrent event. The statistical techniques to analyze the recurrent events can be divided to two groups: (1) Techniques ignoring recurrent events or ignoring the correlatedness of recurrent events within patients. And (2) Techniques that taking into the correlatedness of recurrent events within patients and the whole pattern of the recurrent events over time. Many trials are using both groups of techniques. Within each group of techniques, there are many possible choices. Which one to use is often the question. In this presentation, we will first overview of some commonly used techniques for recurrent events in medical device trials, and then compare the results using different techniques in a medical device trial, and lastly, some discussion about how to analyze recurrent event data given a certain research question.
