Abstract:

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a rich multivariate health survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. For each of the past 50 years, up to 20 minutes of supplemental questions have been added to the core questionnaire. Over the years a variety of agencies have sponsored these supplements on a broad range of topics, including health habits, preventive care, and complementary and alternative medicine. We have compiled historic information from survey documentation, reports, institutional knowledge, and other sources to develop a comprehensive resource of information on NHIS supplements by year and topic. We will present this new resource, as well as interesting findings on the history of NHIS supplemental topics that shed light on the evolution of public health concepts and trends. The results will provide a valuable web resource for NHIS data users.
