Abstract:

It is understood that soil properties vary spatially and that probabilistic approaches to characterizing soil behavior and performing analysis of geostructures is more appropriate than deterministic ones. Roller-integrated measurement of soil stiffness, coupled with GPS location provides extensive data and thus enables a probabilistic approach to soil analysis. Nonparametric detrending of the data is used before empirical variograms are calculated for multiple directions. Evaluation of aggregation on the properties of the variogram and how the behavior at the origin changes are investigated. A state-space model with a hidden stiffness profile and a layer to layer model that properly incorporates the vertical stiffness profile need to be derived. A statistical assessment of weak spots is required. Such evaluations are needed for automatic compaction and quality control processes.
