Abstract:

Mathematics undergraduate students with an interest in statistics are a major source of future statistics postgraduates, and ultimately young statisticians entering employment. It is important, therefore, to nurture the interest of mathematics undergraduate students in statistics, through the delivery of appropriate and engaging statistical courses. Pure mathematics can be considered precise and abstract in nature, as opposed to the descriptive and experimental nature of statistics; this makes it especially challenging to engage mathematics students in statistics, and pitch statistical courses at the right level. In this paper we introduce a set of self-learning materials aimed at mathematics undergraduates taking an introductory statistics course. They can be used either in a small group with discussion or presented to a self-learner who can work at his or her own pace.
