Abstract:

Judging from textbooks written for applied statistics courses most instructors teach the use of manual calculations for most, if not all statistics. As a result much of classroom time, student assignments and quizzes, tests, and exams are devoted to little more than arithmetic. In this paper I suggest a teaching approach that uses the computer for all calculations of statistics from descriptive methods to multiple regression. The approach emphasizes the things one must do before the calculation and the things one must do after the calculation. A surprising amount of classroom time is thus freed up allowing the instructor to teach real and realistic applications and important concepts. Another benefit is no-calculation tests and exams that can be marked by computer.
