Abstract:

Communicating with the public regarding health issues is an important component of disease control and prevention. One source of information for communication planning is national market research surveys which contain data on the public's media habits, internet use, product use, lifestyle, and some health information. To assess the extent to which data from such surveys complement scientific epidemiological public health data, prevalence for health items from these surveys is compared with that from the CDC-sponsored Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Overall levels, demographic breakdowns, and multi-year trends of prevalence are examined from three large consumer surveys with annual samples of 25,000, 50,000, and 12,000 respondents respectively. Effects of different survey methodologies and question format are discussed. Communication applications are described.
