Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to validate the assumption that, in modeling growth using longitudinal IRT models (Embretson, 1991), the three waves of the data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study of 1988 (NELS:88) represent three dimensions. To improve the accuracy of measurement, NELS:88 designed two test booklets at different difficulty levels for each of the second and third waves, and assigned each participant to a booklet based on his/her performance from the assessment of previous wave. Two subsets of data were used in this study: the first contains only two waves of data: the base year and the first follow-up, and the second includes the data of all three-waves. The procedure used to confirm the validity of modeling growth based on the dimensionality structure of NELS:88 is a new version of DETECT (Zhang, 2007).
