Abstract:

In late 2008, the Current Population Survey (CPS) started collecting data on a monthly basis to identify individuals as disabled. This paper uses CPS data from several months to examine participation in the labor force by disabled individuals. The first part explores rates of employment, unemployment, and discouragement over job prospects, for those who are disabled and those who are not. The second part explores the quality of the jobs amongst those who are employed including comparisons of earnings, work hours, and occupations. The third part decomposes differences in employment between those who are disabled and those who are not into differences in demographic characteristics of the two groups and differences in employment within demographic groups. The paper concludes with a comparison of the flows between employment and unemployment for both disabled and not disabled individuals.
