Abstract:

Naturally recurring events such as increase and decrease in vegetation are very sensitive to climate changes and local human activities so the study of the former gives valuable insight into the latter. In this talk we discuss statistical methods to identify and test for trends and abrupt changes in the vegetation of East Africa. For illustration, we use the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) series from satellite remote sensing data collected between 1982 and 2006 over 56,000 1-kilometer grid points in the region.
