Abstract:

A common post-hoc analysis used with a significant MANOVA is the use of several univariate ANOVAs. This procedure, however, ignores the multivariate structure in the data being analyzed. This paper explores the use of stepwise discriminant analysis (SWDA) as a follow-up to a significant MANOVA. Power and Type I error estimates were found using a Monte Carlo simulation. 8046 scenarios were investigated using multiple levels of dependent variables, sample size, effect size, significance level, correlation structure, and the number of variables with significantly differing means. Observed patterns concerning the use of SWDA are presented. SWDA performs well with small correlations among the dependent variables, and with small significance levels, indicating that making an adjustment to the alpha-level to account for multiple tests may be warranted.
