Abstract:

Visual perception and cognition are key factors to take into account when evaluating the effectiveness of statistical graphics. William S. Cleveland and Robert McGill, in their seminal 1985 paper, defined the elementary graphical-perception tasks and ranked them in order of importance. There is a need for more in-depth research into how different visual elements affect perception and cognition. Some data is available from the "eyeballing" game -- a computer application that measures a player's accuracy on a variety of geometric tasks -- and results are presented.
