Abstract:

Revisions to published data are a fact of life for most National Statistical Institutes, but are criticized by users and the press nevertheless. To mitigate such criticism, in each First Release the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in the UK takes pains to explain why major revisions occur, and publishes summary statistics showing the extent and direction of past revisions. In addition, an annual article explores revisions in more depth for Gross Domestic Product, breaking down revisions by industry and by maturity. This paper summarizes the current information provided on revisions and reviews other potential ways of explaining revisions - from additional summary statistics and graphics, to the information gained from modeling the revisions themselves.
