Abstract:

The goal of the Advancing Teachers of Middle School Science (ATOMS2XP) program is to increase the number of highly qualified 5th-8th grade science teachers in school districts throughout the state of Mississippi and the academic achievement levels of their students. The project is grounded on a model of professional development based on best practice research in enhancing teacher science content knowledge, pedagogical skills, and technology-integration skills. Policy implications include a design centered on long-term commitment, building extended university-school partnerships, and sustained funding. We present the results of two-level hierarchical linear models estimating the effects of student-level (n=639) and teacher-level (n=35) science content knowledge on student knowledge gains during the program's first year (2007-2008) in overall science content and in physics and weather.
