Abstract:

Abdominal obesity is associated with major chronic diseases. The measurement of abdominal fat, however, is costly. Simple measurements of abdominal girth are the low-cost alternative for epidemiologists and clinicians. Waist circumference (WC), which correlates significantly with health outcomes, is commonly used. But WC usually has a sizable correlation with body mass index (BMI), which makes difficult to estimate the added effect of abdominal obesity on a given condition. The conicity index (CI) was originally proposed to assess the contribution of WC to health risks, while accounting for overall size. For example, in U.S. adults (NHANES 1999-2004), WC is highly correlated with BMI (r=0.886), while CI is much less correlated with BMI (r=0.499) but remains highly correlated with WC (r=0.806). This presentation will discuss the properties of the CI in the current U.S. population.
