Abstract:

Whenever possible, high school teachers try to connect classroom learning to the real world. A simulated epidemiology investigation allows students to apply the skills they acquired during the year, and our unique school is an optimal setting in which to conduct such an investigation. Over 200 Advanced Placement Statistics and Biology students studied basic tools of epidemiology and investigated a simulated outbreak within the school system as a team. I will provide details on how we organized our student team, how we structured their tasks, and how we evaluated their work. I'll share lessons learned, including what went well, what we will modify, and how we will expand this unit to include other subjects. With your input, we hope to alter this unit for use in other educational settings.
