Abstract:

In this study, post doc participation was analyzed in an effort to determine the motivation for the student taking that position. Differences between date of graduation, field of study and other characteristics were investigated. Also, several National Science Foundation surveys were utilized to determine whether the sampled PhD graduates initially planned on taking the post doc position after graduating. For those that took a post doc position, their reasons for taking the position were analyzed in an effort to determine if they actually wanted the position or took it because other employment was unavailable. Finally, these motivation were investigated for different demographic groups.
