Abstract:

The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) is a household-based, multistage probability sample survey conducted annually by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). We use data from the 1997--2007 NHIS to estimate the annual prevalence of selected chronic health conditions among adults by races/ethnicity, age group and gender, and examine the trends over time. We focus primarily on hypertension, coronary heart disease, cancer, asthma and diabetes as common chronic health conditions for this presentation. Except for the prevalence of asthma, which appears to decrease with increasing age, the study found that the prevalence of the other four chronic health conditions appears to increase with age.
