Abstract:

Many teaching articles focus on students' self-confidence or self-assessed competency, often equating these with competency. Other articles report a weak link between confidence and competence and inaccuracies in self-assessments. I present data showing a prevalence of overconfidence among MBA students. For doctoral students, self-assessment is fairly accurate overall, but more competent students have tended to be under-confident and vice versa. Overconfidence could induce inadequate self-study & practice in acquiring skill in a topic, with decreased competency. Doctoral students, especially, benefit from an appropriate level of confidence, both during their studies and after graduation. I suggest ways to elevate awareness of this skill and ways for students to assess their self-assessments.
