Abstract:

Scan statistic methods are used in biosurveillance to determine the significance of clusters taking into account variations in background rates. For the constant background fixed window size case simple accurate approximations to compute p-values are available. For the non-constant background or for simultaneously testing with multiple window sizes, approximations were lacking and simulations used. The present paper discusses approximations to handle multiple window widths in the non-constant null-background temporal retrospective and prospective cases for the continuous, discrete, and ratchet scan statistics.
