Abstract:

Our complex and uncertain world depends upon statistics for both successful careers and a more meaningful citizenship, but typical k--12 mathematics education does not yet reflect this need! From my 45 years of experience in introducing statistics into mathematics classes for grades 3--12, I recommend how to improve the education of our students in K--2, 3--5, 6--8, and 9--12, and provide a guide to making room for needed statistical topics by reducing the time wasted on such less-productive topics as reducing complex fractions and polynomials. As we should also introduce statistics into K--12 science curriculum, I have integrated Goodman's and Myhre's new value-creating process to solve stakeholder problems into the scientific method. To implement my recommendations, we need to form a genuine collaboration of mathematicians, mathematics educators, teachers, students, and parents.
