Abstract:
|
The analysis of means (ANOM) procedure was originally proposed by Ott (1967) as alternative to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test for the equality of means of several normal populations. Bakir (1989, 1994) developed distribution-free (or nonparametric) versions of the ANOM procedure to test the equality of several means. Based on Bakir's ANOM versions, Wludyka and Nelson (1999) proposed two (ANOM)-type procedures as viable nonparametric (distribution-free) tests for homogeneity of variances. The purpose in this paper is to show that the Wludyka and Nelson's procedures, even though based on ranks, are not truly distribution-free. Modified versions that are truly distribution-free homogeneity of variances tests are also proposed.
