Abstract:

Our primary objective is to determine and compare vaccine effects of LAIV and TIV on pneumonia and influenza-related medical encounters during the flu season. We have designed a population-based seasonal cohort study of more than a million (17--49 years old) active-duty, nonrecruit military service members stationed in the United States during 2004--2005, 2005--2006, or 2006--2007 influenza season. The major outcome variables are incidence rates, incidence rate ratios, and vaccine effects. Overall, immunization with either vaccine was associated with significant reduction in incidence rates of pneumonia and influenza. Using multivariate adjustment method, personnel immunized with TIV had significantly less incident visits per person year compared to those unvaccinated.
