Abstract:

The use of open- and closed-book exams in an introductory statistics course is described. A review of the literature provides some initial thoughts on closed-book versus open-book assessments. Our work expands on the current body of research involving open- and closed-book exams and handwritten notecards over a two year period. Statistical analyses of student final exam scores in conjunction with end of course critiques are analyzed under the different exam policies.
