Abstract:

Disinterest and boredom is often encountered in statistics classes. While the use of example data to demonstrate the application of statistical techniques helps engage the students, it can be a challenge to incorporate data sets that are meaningful to a frequently diverse body of students. This presentation outlines a class data collection exercise that can be used during the first lecture of courses in introductory statistics or the design of experiments. The class then has "their own" set of data that can be used to demonstrate a variety of statistical concepts and techniques: summary statistics, confidence intervals, statistical inference, randomization, sampling, comparison of two samples, factorial design, contingency tables, box plots and histograms. The exercise has the added benefit of being fun and a good icebreaker with the class.
