Abstract:

Nurses frequently view the need to take statistics courses as a barrier to pursuing a graduate education. In a January 2009 national survey of colleges of nursing (N = 35/72), 74% of DNP and 100% of PhD programs required 1 or more statistics courses. Math/statistics faculty taught the statistics courses in 63% of DNP and 79% of PhD programs. Similarly, 82% of DNP and 100% of PhD programs required 1 or more research courses, but nursing faculty taught the research courses in 100% of DNP and 90% of PhD programs. Statistics content was included in the research courses in 69% of DNP and 65% of PhD programs. Research courses represent fertile ground for teaching statistics. They provide opportunities for studio, problem-based, and learner-centered teaching that engages students in simultaneously learning statistics, applying the knowledge, and demonstrating its relevance to the profession.
