Abstract:

With our increasing ability to collect scientific images in settings like medicine, space exploration, and forensics, the need for automated image analysis tools has grown. Many imaging applications, from face recognition to validation of codes that simulate physical phenomena to internet image searches, rely on comparisons between images. These kinds of comparisons require both a context-appropriate representation of the images (feature selection) and a means of computing distances between images (distance metrics or non-metric rankings of a collection of images). In this talk I'll review some of the tools and concepts currently used to compare images, including feature selection and choices of distance measures.
