Abstract:

An experiment is underway to investigate and obtain quantitative results for a uranium hydride formation process. Uranium hydride behavior is measured by quantifying corrosion density, based on spatial distribution and volume as a function of aging time on surfaces of uranium coupons. The actual experiment measurements include hydrogen pressure measured over time in the test cells containing the coupons coupled with digital images of the metal surface from which corrosion can be observed and quantified. The objective of the experiment is to identify and understand factors affecting reactivity while accounting for experiment conditions that may effect the corrosion measurements. Three main experiment variables for initial investigation were identified and varied: headspace gas pressure, uranium interface gap, and coupon surface abrasion.
