Dr. W. Edwards Deming is widely recognized for his contributions to enhancing the quality of manufactured products and for alerting industrial management to the problems of system identification, process variation and project management. His work spans the 20^th century. We are now well into the 21^st century and new areas possessing quality problems attract our attention, for example "medical informatics" and "information technology". What is the role of the statistician in these new professional arenas and what might Dr. Deming say?
