Abstract:

Informed policy decisions require good evidence. Statisticians play a key role in gathering, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating such evidence. I will illustrate the contribution of statistics from evidence to policy in the evidence-based medicine context of comparative effectiveness research, which has received funding via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The ASA represents the discipline of statistics in various policy forums, helping to integrate the science of statistics into policy. While engagement in policy matters represents an opportunity, it also represents a responsibility. I will describe and examine the way the ASA engages in policy and encourages and supports individual statisticians to do so. I will discuss the challenges and possible pitfalls of this engagement.
