Abstract:
|
Making data from scientific articles widely accessible requires grappling with problems: from ethical to technological to fiscal. Still, the rich opportunities to participate in and contribute to scientific data-sharing pose five significant challenges to Statistics. First are dual challenges to establish [statistical] criteria to define levels of data availability for determining the usefulness of data made available for statistical journals and for publications in other scientific communities. Two more challenges are to provide sound statistical algorithms, modules, software and tools expressly for large, cooperatively generated scientific data bases and for multi-faceted research possibilities. The final challenge is to use public availability of scientific data to advance statistical education in science courses and to embed real science into statistics courses.
