Abstract:
|
Global increases in anthropogenically-driven eutrophication have heightened concerns on the potential impacts on phytoplankton communities. Among the concerns is growing evidence of an increase in the frequency and intensity of harmful algal blooms (HABs). We describe analyses of a HAB monitoring effort in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). The goal of the study was to describe spatial and temporal variability in the distribution, frequency of occurrence, and composition of HABs in the IRL, within the context of regional differences in selected environmental factors such as hydrologic conditions. Vector autoregressive time series with exogenous variables modeling was used to describe the dynamics of HAB species in the IRL. Such modeling can be used to forecast future blooms but is also useful for providing insight via simulation into appropriate spatial and temporal scales of sampling.
