Abstract:
|
Sports and philanthropy go hand in hand. With that in mind, the American Statistical Association's Caucus for Women in Statistics decided to hold a fun run and walk annually at the Joint Statistical Meetings starting in 1989. They initiated a race to not only raise funds for the Gertrude Cox Scholarship but to raise awareness so that women statisticians who continue onto graduate school would apply for the scholarship. Twenty years later, the Gertrude Cox race is an event that runners and walkers look forward to as part of the Joint Statistical Meetings. This paper will review the last twenty years of the Cox Scholarship race. In addition, the paper will present a review of the literature to examine the costs and benefits of combining sports and philanthropy.
