Abstract:

Cartographic research on map symbolization and design over the past half century has developed and tested methods for representing geographically-referenced statistical data on maps. Complementary research in the more recent sub-field of geovisualization has focused on dynamic representations, including those with dynamics depending on the data (e.g., animated maps of time series statistics) and those with dynamics depending on the user, thus interactive applications. This presentation will provide an overview of some key developments in cartography and geovisualization that provide a basis for design, implementation, and application of exploratory spatial data analysis tools. In addition, some new challenges associated with the emergent field of visual analytics and its emphasis on support of analytical reasoning and scalability of methods will be introduced.
