Abstract:

A movement developed in the 1990s to apply the principles and findings of cognitive psychology to the design of statistical maps. This movement involved considerable research and was guided by a new theory of how a statistical map is read. This theory proposed that statistical maps are read in four successive stages based on memory and problem solving. The presentation will review research findings that have supported the theory. This presentation will explain how this theory accounts for the duration and accuracy of the stages of statistical map reading. Finally, brief mention will be given to how this theory may be applied to the reading of spatial displays in general.
