Abstract:

Capacity building is the development and strengthening of knowledge, skills, resources, infrastructure, institutional structures and processes, and policy and legal frameworks---all with the goal of empowering individuals and institutions to achieve their potential and meet the needs of the communities they serve in a sustainable way. In all countries, lack of statistical capacity hinders the gathering, maintenance, and use of data for evidence-based policymaking. Panelists will discuss global and regional challenges in capacity building; the need for greater statistical capacity for policymaking and achieving international development goals; the need for statistical education at all levels, with greater inclusion of women and minorities; changing needs for human capital in the USA and abroad; and the role of professional statistical societies in promoting statistical capacity globally.
