Abstract:
|
The Women's Ischemia Syndrome Evaluation (WISE) is a four center observational study of women referred for coronary angiography for evaluation of symptoms suggestive of ischemia. It aims to improve diagnostic testing and explore female-specific ischemic heart disease pathophysiology. To explore female specific heart disease both sex and gender are relevant. To illustrate, not entirely tongue in cheek, sex means men have testes and women have ovaries. Gender means men have wives and women have support networks. Sex and gender are less relevant to directing a coordinating center and analyzing the data, though in these roles women can be particularly good role models for young women and persuade them that a career in clinical trials is one of great opportunity and satisfaction.
