Abstract:

The Cox scholarship, named after pioneer Gertrude M. Cox, was established in 1989 to encourage more women to enter the statistical profession. I was one of the first recipients, and the scholarship marked a turning point in my career. The award inspired me to set goals and achieve them. Specifically, it gave me the confidence to call the admissions committee for the Harvard School of Public Health, and negotiate for support to attend the doctoral program in biostatistics. Since graduation, I have worked to support NIH-sponsored clinical trials, first as a post-doctoral fellow at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, and later at the EMMES Corporation in Rockville, MD. I will give examples in my talk of applications of statistics to public health and biomedical research, and discuss how this field has given me opportunities for collaboration, leadership, and great personal satisfaction.
