Abstract:

Micromaps are graphics that link statistical information to an organized set of small maps. They take on a range of forms to serve different pattern visualization tasks. These forms include linked, conditioned, and comparative micromaps. Linked micromaps link entities mapped as polygons, lines, or points to statistical graphics such as box plots. Conditioned micromaps highlight different subsets of entities in a grid of replicated maps based on predictor variables or comparison statistics while encoding a response variable in color. Comparative micromaps are a grid of response variable maps indexed by one or more variables and enhanced with additional maps to address cognitive issues such as change blindness. Examples suggest an almost unlimited range of applications include baseball statistics (points), network statistics (lines), and ecoregion statistics from massive data sets.
