Abstract:
|
Drs. Elston and Merikangas will describe different aspects of genetic studies of unrelated and related individuals. They will compare and contrast the two approaches in terms of statistical power, feasibility, cost and effort. Considerations in this comparison will include strength of the genetic effect, phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity, and interactive influences of genes and environmental exposures. The application of pedigree data to define phenotypes, intermediate phenotypes and modes of transmission and the use of this information to refine studies of unrelated individuals will be described.
