Abstract:

The daunting task of teaching biostatistics to a vast audience of health practitioners is magnified when teaching over the internet where students feel distanced from the instructor and their classmates. We have found that removing the distanced feeling of the web-based course makes the class more engaging for both the students and the instructor. Our lectures are presented in Elluminate which broadcasts both audio and video to a "live" audience. Each lecture consists of a PowerPoint presentation as equations are solved and pictures are drawn directly on the Elluminate whiteboard. Students ask questions through their own microphone or by typing into a discussion board. In this talk I will demonstrate the Elluminate tools including clips from class and discussing various techniques, such as discussion boards and chat rooms, which have been successful in engaging the online audience.
